Do foam rollers even work?

You’ve probably all seen a foam roller at one time or another. Those tube-like things sitting in the corner of the gym that looks like a glorified pool noodle. Have you ever wondered how exactly you use it and what the beneifts are? I’m here to tell you that foam rolling is a HUGE help as a part of your self-care routine. I make it a point to talk to my clients about the importance of having a good self-care regimen, often which includes using this wonderful tool.

Rollers come in all different firmness levels and lengths. I personally have a 36 inch extra firm one that I use on a consistent basis (yes, I have to practice what I preach). Some rollers come with little nubs and some have a flat surface. You can find them at varying price points; however I am a believer in you get what you pay for. You don’t need to break the bank but I’d suggest paying more than $5 if you want something to last more than 6 months. If you need help seeing what options are out there, Amazon has hundreds of them to choose from. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the choices you can visit your local sporting goods store and see which one feels right to you.

Ok, so you’ve got your roller. Now what? If you belong to a gym, ask a trainer for some tips on what to do. Figure out what muscles/bodyparts need to be addressed and go from there. YouTube also has a plethora of videos to help you get started. Legs, back, hips, shoulders all benefit from a good roll out. How long should I do it for you ask? I personally like to foam roll for 5-10 minutes with great results! You can vary the time to your needs, but I tell clients I’d rather have them use it for less time more frequently than more time less frequently. Like anything else, it’s about maintainence.

In addition to foam rolling, stretching, a meditative practice, and proper nutrition, adding massage in the mix will help keep your body and mind in a healthy state. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule an appointment!
